Summerfest FAQs

WHY IS IT CALLED SUMMERFEST NOW INSTEAD OF SUMMER CAMP? WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
The new name reflects the fact that we are not hosting this year’s event at an actual campsite, but rather a college campus. That being said, teenagers will still experience the same tribal wars, connect groups, live worship, and memories to last a lifetime.

WHAT GRADES IS SUMMERFEST FOR?
Junior High SummerFest is for students graduating 5th, 6th and 7th grade in 2024. High School SummerFest is for students graduating 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade in 2024.

ARE JUNIOR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL DOING CAMP TOGETHER?
No, these are two events happening simultaneously but differently. All sleeping accommodations, meals, activities, and connect groups will be separate but junior highers and high schoolers will be combining in the evening for services.

WHAT DOES THE REGISTRATION PRICE INCLUDE?
Sleeping accommodations, meals, activities, and ticket to SummerFest.

WHEN DO TICKET SALES CLOSE?
Last chance to register is June 20th. NO EXCEPTIONS!

HOW WILL MY TEENAGER GET TO AND FROM SUMMERFEST?
Parents are responsible for dropping off and picking up teenagers at SDSU. We will have a designated drop off and pick up spot which will be sent leading up to the event. Check in is Sunday July 7th starting at 3pm and check out will be Thursday July 11th starting at 8am.

WHAT ARE THE SLEEPING ACCOMMODATIONS?
Teenagers and leaders will be staying in secure dorms. We will have one building for the girls and one building for the boys. Junior highers and high schoolers will be rooming separately with their respective leaders. Each dorm room accommodates 3 teens and will have 3 beds, dressers, a desk and a mini fridge. They’ll just need to bring bedding.

AM I ABLE TO PICK UP MY TEEN FROM SUMMERFEST FOR A FEW HOURS AND BRING THEM BACK?
We highly discourage this as it will interrupt the experience of the event. However, if this is an important matter, please email us at summerfest@awakenchurch.com to let us know the circumstances and sign our release of liability waiver.

WHAT IF I NEED TO DROP MY TEEN OFF LATE OR PICK THEM UP EARLY?
Please email us at summerfest@awakenchurch.com to let us know the circumstances and sign our release of liability waiver.

SDSU IS AN OPEN COLLEGE CAMPUS, WILL THERE BE SECURITY?
Absolutely. Our security team will be working in coordination with SDSU’s campus police and security team and the system and team they have in place are remarkable and very detailed. We will also have a very low teen to adult leader ratio which will help greatly. The dorms and most of the activity areas are fenced in and only accessible by controlled key cards.

IS THERE CELL SERVICE?
Yes, however we ask students to leave their phones in their dorms throughout the day so they can be present during competitions, meals, free time and services. Students can get into their dorms throughout the day if they need to access their phone. If your teen doesn’t have a phone, they will be able to communicate with you through a leader in the event of an urgent matter.

CAN PARENTS COME TO HELP CHAPERONE?
Not unless they’re part of our high school team.
*all volunteers are background checked and have completed our DNA course*

WHAT IS THE STUDENT TO LEADER RATIO?
9 students per every 1 leader or better

WHAT DO I NEED TO PACK?
A packing list will be sent out leading up to SummerFest.

Where to go:

Bring your junior higher to church and meet one of our Hi Team members at the front doors. They can direct you to our Jr High room where you are able to check-in and meet the leaders that will be ministering to your kids!

What Happens in Service:

Once they check-in, we will head to adult service for praise and worship together at the front of the altar. Then Jr high will be released to the Jr High room to have a blast and hear a word from God tailored to Jr high ages. The topic preached to Jr high is the same topic in the adult service (again, tailored to their age) so you can have family conversations at home, knowing what was discussed in church. To end service, they meet in their connect groups with their connect leader where they can have deeper conversations and ministry as well as grow relationships with other youth their age and gender.

Safety Info:

Every leader in our junior high ministry is background checked and screened. Safety is our highest priority. Our leaders want to connect, point them to God, and help guide your child through these crucial years in growing up. A key to that is building a relationship with you as a parent. We love meeting parents and working together!

Other Events and Meetings:

There are other events throughout the year for our junior highers, including the always popular “Lock-In”. Details for all events will be emailed out and announced. Our High School Ministry meets once a month, however, those nights are only for high schoolers.

Our goal is to partner with parents to guide youth in their walk with God so they are full of faith, hope and love! We know junior highers should have a specific place for them in the house of God, and hope to see you and your junior highers at any of our campuses and services!

What happens at an Awaken Youth service?

Service starts at 5pm on the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sunday of the month. Every service starts with a pre-party that includes music, snacks, and mingling, with the purpose to connect every teenager with a leader and a new friend. Then we go into Service that includes praise and worship, games, an inspiring preach, and ministry time/opportunity to pray for anyone who needs prayer.
The Afterparty follows service with different games, dancing, connecting, DJ, and fun.

Safety Info

Every youth leader over 18 years old is background checked and screened, and we have an average ratio of 1 leader to every 5-8 youth. We also hire an off-duty officer (ODO) to supplement our security team. Your child’s safety is our highest priority.

Our leaders are not babysitters, parents, or professionals, but are commissioned to love and lead our youth. We view them more as coaches, exemplifying what it looks like to live a life after God and how to make wise choices.

Why does Awaken Youth play edited secular music?

We play music that everyone can relate to. We DO NOT play any music that is explicit or has any swearing. However, when we stay relevant to the music, we have found it easier to reach unsaved people. To some, the church is a new and uncomfortable place to be. When we play music that they are familiar with, they feel more at ease and more willing to be a part of our services.

Can I, as a parent, come to Awaken Youth?

If you’re curious about what we do, we’d love to have you come to check it out. However, as part of our security procedures, we ask that a security team member accompany you throughout the night.

At Awaken Youth High School we believe that your teen has a God-given calling and destiny. We have a strong desire to bring that calling out and see your teen fulfill the God dream for their life. This is a place where your teen will be developed as a leader in their sphere of influence. We want to partner with you and set your teen up to flourish in everything they put their hand to.
